ABOUT THE COURSE

​

This course is an online short course on the topics of cremation and cremated remains in archaeology.

​

Aims of the Course

(1) Introduce participants to the process of cremation and its use as a mortuary rite in the past.

(2) Provide participants with an understanding of the application of archaeological excavation, osteology and analytical science to the study of cremation related contexts.

(3) Enable participants to explore the archaeology of Sedgeford with respect to cremation related activity, through consideration of case studies.

The course format has been designed for you to work independently, at your own pace. It includes a mixture of video content, reading material and participation activities such as quizzes and forum/database posting. There is a forum activity for course queries which is monitored by the SHARP Human Remains Team, who will aim to answer your query as soon as possible. Please note that this may not be immediately.

The course is delivered via SHARP’s virtual learning environment (VLE) platform Digital Trenches. You will need to register as a Digital Trenches user in order to access this course.

COURSE DATES

​

Course content will be available from 30th September 2023 but you can book a place now so that you are all set up and enrolled for when the course opens. Bookings can also be made at anytime after the course opens.

You will have access to the course for at least one year from the date of your enrolment or the course start date (whichever is later).
