Come dig with us...
Have you ever thought about digging on an archaeological excavation? SHARP is not only about academic research, it is also focussed on developing the skills and opportunities for others to engage with archaeology.
We welcome all volunteers regardless of background and often no previous experience of archaeology is necessary, as on-site training courses are run every week during the excavation, as well as a wide array of other specialised training courses.
There are several ways in which to participate in one of Britain’s leading archaeological research and training opportunities:
We welcome people with at least three weeks excavation
experience, or who have previously attended a
Basic Excavation & Recording Techniques (BERT) course, if you wish to join us as an excavation volunteer. If you have no previous experience then you must enrol on a BERT course if wish to excavate, after which you are welcome to stay on as an excavation volunteer for the cost of facilities only.
We appreciate that there are many people who would love to join us but cannot, or do not wish to dig. There are many non-excavation activities on site to get involved in, including cleaning and sorting finds and environmental processing. NB please check before applying, as some of these activities are dependent on the research taking place at the time.
2014 Excavation and Research Projects
For 2014, we are looking to expand our excavation activity to look at a variety of different sites within the parish which will cover a fantastic range of archaeology. We will be offering the opportunity to dig on the following projects:
- Evaluating a Roman Farmstead w/c 13th, 20th and 27th July
- Excavating a Middle to Late Anglo-Saxon Settlement and associated industrial area all season
- Evaluating a Medieval Manor and Village Landscape all season
- Researching a First World War Militarised Landscape w/c 20th July
You can find out more information about the above projects and
our other work by visiting Our Research page.
