Well, it has been left to me to produce this weeks web-log. Alas it is also the last one of the 2008 season, which was a shorter than normal one, partly due to non archaeological items, thankfully now resolved. In 2009 we hope to be back with a 6 week season.

The week started with the SHARP open day on the Sunday with over 500 people visiting the site in glorious sunny weather. Special thanks go to Pauline for the planning and Amanda and Mark for their services at the café.

The Tuesday lecture in the church was given by Dr. Neil Faulkner on “What did the Romans do for Sedgeford” the attendance was good and enjoyed by Sharpies and visitors alike.

SHARP education courses held in the final week included the six day Human Remains Course, with our own specialist team, plus two one day courses on Pottery and Animal Bones. All courses were well attended.

Trench 9. After some very hard work, in the intense heat, Piers team found the relationship of the E-W ditch in their N-S trench. In addition some Ipswich ware Pottery was excavated in the bottom fill which will help with the dating.

Trench 7 This trench was given over to the National Young Archaeologists. A party of twelve with instructors visited on two days. They were aged between 8 and 15 and managed to excavate some Roman Grey-ware Pottery in the trench. Spokesman Chris Sykes said that everybody had enjoyed the experience.

Trench 6 extension came up with a nice bone handle.

Trench 6 itself however cam up with the best find of the week, a Bone Comb with rivets intact which was found in David's feature. In addition beam slots and yet more post holes give hope that buildings will be found next season.

Thanks to all our supervisors especially John, Kate, Zoe and Mark for their patience and expertise.

In conclusion, I wish to dispel two rumours circulating.
1. No, John is not still in the same place as at the start of the season
2. There is no truth whatsoever that the two skeletons found at the Peddars Way-Fring Road crossing were bodies of Sharpies who had refused to pay their punch party contribution.

Hope to see old friends and new in 2009!
